Disaster Recovery as a Service
You worked hard to get your business where it is today, and you don’t want anything to interfere with all the time, money, and hard work you invested in it. That is why all businesses should seriously consider looking into Disaster Recovery as a Service.
What is Disaster Recovery?
Disaster Recovery is a set of plans and processes put in place to regain access and functionality to a business’s IT infrastructure after natural disasters, power outages, cyber-attacks, or any other event that would prevent a companies technology from working properly. In other words, a Disaster Recovery Plan helps to ensure the business continuity of a company that has been affected by some sort of disaster.
Unfortunately, disasters are unpredictable. Whether it is a natural disaster such as a hurricane, a power outage, a cyber-attack, or even a mistake caused by an employee, there is no way to know when a disaster will occur. Prevention is the key to keeping your business safe and secure during an unplanned event.
As a business owner, you might never think a disaster will strike your business and cause significant data loss. Around 58% of companies do not have a disaster recovery plan, and about 60% fail to reopen after a disaster.
How Do We Protect Our Data From Disasters?
A large part of disaster recovery is prevention. Being proactive is the 1st step to putting a dependable plan in place. To help protect a business and its data from succumbing to an IT Disaster, some steps need to be taken:
Risk Assessment:
Businesses need to know where they are most vulnerable and thus susceptible to unnecessary risks. Ensuring that there is a thorough risk assessment done on every aspect of a business’s IT infrastructure is a great starting point to developing a Disaster Recovery Plan.
Mission Critical Identification:
One of the reasons over 50% of businesses do not reopen after a disaster is because they have not protected the essential data, technology, and various other resources from being lost. Creating a plan to protect and recovery these mission critical resources is the bare minimum needed to give your business a chance at recovering after a disaster.
Backup:
Since it is not always possible to prevent a disaster from occurring, regularly backing up essential data, applications, etc., will significantly increase a businesses’ chances of recovery. Also, these backups will help reduce the time of recovery once a disaster has occurred.
Continuous Testing & Optimization:
Developing a Disaster Recovery Plan and regularly backing up mission-critical technologies and data is a great start, but it is still not enough. The amount of time that passes from a disaster occurring and a business recovering is significant. The longer it takes to recover, the lower the chances of the business recovering successfully. With that being said, it is crucial to allocate a resource or outsource the work to a Managed Service Provider, like Data-Tech, to increase your chances.
A Disaster Has Happened, What Now?
Now is the time to put your recovery plan into action. It is important to remain calm and follow the steps that your team or your MSP has laid out and provided. You have prepared for this day and know that if you follow the Disaster Recovery Plan, you should be able to recover your data and maintain business continuity. Rest assured that the diligence of continuous testing & optimization has prepared you for this exact event.

Case Studies:
Photographer
This example, unfortunately, happened to one of our employees. A Photographer was hired for a wedding. They took some amazing pictures and were able to show the newlyweds throughout the night how great the pictures were turning out. At the end of the night, both the photographer and newlyweds were extremely excited to see the finished product. Then two months go by and the newlyweds were told that all of their pictures were lost due to a corrupt hard drive.
Without out any Disaster Recovery Plan in place, there was no way of getting those pictures back. This greatly affected the photographer’s business and the multiple clients that had their photos on that hard drive. If the company had a disaster recovery plan, the lost photos could be easily retrievable. The customers would still have pictures on arguably the most important day of their lives, and the photographer would still have their business.
Pixar
During Toy Story 2, one of the employees accidentally entered a unique command. The command object removed files quickly, and as soon as Pixar tried to stop the command, 90% of the film was gone. With a Disaster Recovery plan, you can recover from any accident that wipes out your business’s data.
