Deep Packet Inspection of Secure Socket Layer (DPI-SSL)
Cyber-criminals are constantly looking for any vulnerability to exploit in order to introduce potentially catastrophic threats into business networks. Now there’s an avenue that they’re actively pursuing, and with good reason: Encryption.
A website becomes encrypted through the addition of a Secure Socket Layer (SSL), a protocol that uses a cryptographic system to keep data sent over the Internet private. But here’s the problem; the “dirty little secret” about firewalls—the first, and sometimes only defense against cyber-attack:
Traditional firewalls cannot inspect encrypted traffic.
What’s more, encryption is only increasing across the Internet. While upwards of 40% of Internet traffic on any given corporate network is encrypted now, it’s estimated by the end of this year, that number is likely to jump 10% or more.
According to a recent Gartner survey, “Less than 20% of organizations with a firewall, an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) or a Unified Threat Management (UTM) appliance decrypt inbound or outbound SSL traffic.” In other words, over 80% of organizations with these safeguards in place are left vulnerable to attack through encryption.
The Answer: DPI-SSL!
DPI-SSL extends Dell SonicWALL’s Deep Packet Inspection technology to allow for the inspection of encrypted HTTPS traffic and other SSL-based traffic. The SSL traffic is decrypted transparently, scanned for threats and then re-encrypted and sent along to its destination if no threats or vulnerabilities are found. DPI-SSL provides additional security, application control, and data leakage prevention for analyzing encrypted HTTPS and other SSL-based traffic. What’s more, all of this happens without introducing any latency (delays) into the network.
In a nutshell, DPI-SSL closes that huge hole that hackers are avidly working to exploit.
While technology like this was once a considerable expense for companies to adopt, DPI-SSL is now a standard feature in Data-Tech’s innovative “Firewall-as-a-Service” (FWaaS) offering. It also comes standard with certain Dell SonicWALL firewall purchases.
