I have a friend who is in the Real Estate business. Email communication is absolutely vital to their company to be successful. Their 3 offices have 8-10 realtor agents in each office who all log into the same email system, which also holds their data base of clients, prospects and contacts. One of the agents received what appeared to be a legitimate email from the VP of operations. The message read, “Connie, please use the attached file to update our prospect data base, this needs to be done ASAP” It even had his email signature at the bottom of the email.

Well, little did she know this “fake” email is called Phishing or Spoofing email. She proceeded to upload the file into their database, and within 15 minutes their server and all workstations were locked down with Ransomware. This ended up costing the company 5 days of downtime as well as paying a ransom to get their data back, of $15,000.

Phishing attacks are more rampant than ever before, rising by more than 162 percent from 2010 to 2017. They cost organizations around the globe $4.5 billion every year and over half of internet users get at least one phishing email per day.
